- As a curious side-note, I'll paraphrase a question and answer
- asked of an old computer magazine in the early 1980s (It was A+
- magazine, for those who care.)
-
- "Why is person shown using the computer on the manual for
- Appleworks a caucasian male?"
-
- The magazine's reply was essentially:
-
- "What would you prefer in counterpoint? To appeal to all users,
- we would need to show a caucasian, african, hispanic, native
- american, and asian together. Further, both a man and a woman of
- each culture must be represented. And to avoid further
- discrimination, one handicapped, and one non-handicapped user,
- for a total of twenty-four people gathered around the machine,
- all an equal distance from the camera. The fact is that the vast
- majority of the users of the program are, indeed, caucasian
- males. And the fact that the person chosen to be photographed may
- simply represent a random selection from the pool of available
- models."
-
- Its an age-old argument. If you pick someone randomly, you will
- more often than not pick a member of the majority, and be
- criticized for that. If you _intentionally_ pick a minority member,
- you are guilty of reverse-descrimination, though in many
- occasions this selection is thought of as a catalyst so that in
- the future, it will not be necessary. The jury is still out, tho,
- on whether that is a working policy or not.
-
- Oddly enough, the first example that came to mind was Nichelle
- Nichols portrayal of Uhura (chosen because of her ancestry)
- influencing a young Whoopie Goldberg (aka Guinan) to become an
- actor.
-
- It works both ways.
