- Hmm. Trenches are really beautiful creatures. My favorite trench,
- however, got blasted too. It was called Poinsettia Trench because if was
- off of a street called Poinsettia lane. It was a mellow trench, with
- about 5 foot sides and it had lots of curbs stacked up at various
- intervals, all old, worn, tenderly abused. The trench also snaked
- downhill, so it was really easy to keep your speed (or go too fast!!). It
- was about 40 feet long with 15 feet of transition. For a while some guys
- put a really steep quarter pipe at a strategic location, and that was
- really fun.. there was also a little ramp to a platform to a fake
- hand-rail down that was placed on top of one of the banks.
-
- The first thing that happened was that they snaked all of the curbs
- there.. but it was a popular trench, so everybody pitched in and brought
- new ones. The next step they took was to spray concrete gravel
- everywhere. Urg. We went to skate there one day, and we had a rather
- rude awakening.. the sad thing is that the trench is near no houses, it's
- in the middle of nowhere. So whatever. Poinsettia trench is unskateable,
- for the time being.
-
- There was also a cool piece of terrain near Poinsettia called the Funnel.
- It was literally a concrete funnel, about 20 feet deep, with a big storm
- drain thingy in the bottom. It was so fun to drop in and just soul-carve,
- weave up the walls and try to keep your speed for as many rotations as
- possible. Sometimes we'd do tandem runs, each person going a different
- direction and turning at different intervals. It was also lighted by a
- street light, so it was skatable 24hrs, but probably best to skate at
- night because it was so hot to skate it during the day.
-
- One more thing, and of you remember that Transworld a while back with Matt
- Hensley on the front doing a big frontside air out of a trench? That
- trench is also right near my house.. it's a bit steeper than Poinsettia,
- with walls about 10 feet or so.. there is this one part (where Hensley is
- airing) that goes vert under a pipe bridge that goes overhead. The
- picture is taken from under the pipe bridge... the way Hensley is skating,
- there is a HUGE 30 foot drop in where the trench is huge, and there are
- arrows along the side for where to turn and then finally make the approach
- under the bride and take off. I've never seen anyone skate it though,
- partly because it's so crazy, and also because that part is usually pretty
- marshy. Anyway..
