- Another popular group of shenanigans involve pay phones. Just calling one
- is a shenanigan, since anyone who answers it is confused because pay
- phones don't usually ring. We had a list of about 75 pay phones, which we
- would call until someone answered, and then ask them odd questions.
-
- A more elaborate pay phone shenanigan involves TWO pay phones. One to
- call from, and one to call. They can be next to each other or distant,
- but they should be within sight. There are the usual shenanigans, such as
- claiming to be clairvoyant and telling the person what they're wearing.
-
- If there's a row of pay phones, one fun thing to do is ring them one at a
- time. As soon as one rings, hang up and dial another... This confuses
- people greatly, and usually doesn't even cost you a quarter.
-
- Once, my friend I called a pay phone at a gas station from another pay
- phone across the street. Two teenagers walking by saw their chance to
- play a joke on someone, and answered the phone.
- I explained that I had a collect call from "Bob" in Toronto, Canada
- (which is a long way from here.) The teenager, playing along, said that
- he would accept charges. My friend took the phone and played the part of
- Bob. He chatted with him for a few minutes, and then said he'd call right
- back. We hung up and jumped into the car.
-
- The teens were laughing their heads off, proud of how they had fooled
- "Bob" into thinking they knew him. Just as they were walking into the
- station, however, my friend and I drove slowly past, and yelled out the
- window, "Did you really think we were calling from Toronto?" The look on
- their faces was priceless...
