- THE FACTS:
-
- For my birthday, I got this instructional book/cassette called "Stand Alone
- Tapes". It is a 60-minute tape, with 12 songs, and the booklet has the chord
- progressions to each song, and the appropriate (or at least *some* appropriate)
- scales that can be used to solo. The music on the tape is the rhythm section
- only. You provide the solo. There's also a section for each song that tells
- you when to solo, etc. For example, song #1 might look like this:
-
- Verse 1: INTRO VERSE.
-
- Verse 2: You solo.
-
- Verse 3: STOP TIME VERSE - you solo.
-
- Verse 4: PIANO SOLOS.
-
- Verse 5: You solo.
-
- Verse 6: 2nd GUITAR SOLOS.
-
- Verse 7: You solo
-
- Verse 8: You solo.
-
- Verse 9: ORGAN SOLOS.
-
- Verse 10: STOP TIME VERSE - you solo.
-
- Verse 11: You solo.
-
- Verse 12: LAST VERSE - LONG ENDING.
-
- There are three different tapes/booklets: Blues, Rock, and Fusion. They
- are "A National Guitar Workshop Publication", and the address on the booklet
- is:
- Alfred Publishing Co., Inc.
- 16380 Roscoe Blvd.
- P.O. Box 10003
- Van Nuys, CA 91410-0003
-
- The price for the set is $9.95 (US). (That includes the tape and booklet.)
-
- MY REVIEW:
-
- I personally agree with the line on the booklet cover that says, "The most
- effective practice tools you will ever use!" I had *LOADS* of fun with this
- stuff! The music sounds great, not cheesy, low-production stuff like alot of
- other similar material. The songs are very long, so you can try out different
- things, figuring out what works and what doesn't. I got the Blues one, and
- while the scales are relatively simple, I still found it to be a bit of a work-
- out, and I'd say I'm an intermediate/experienced guitarist with quite a bit of
- theory under my belt. I plan to get the Fusion and Rock sets next (if I don't
- already get them for Christmas).
- Bottom line: I highly recommend these tapes for anyone like me, who needs
- practice soloing with a real band, but doesn't have a real band to practice
- with. At $9.95, they're less than the price of a half hour lesson in most
- music stores, and *WELL* worth the price.
-
- [Disclaimer: I have only tried the Blues tape/booklet. I assume the others
- are as good, but I cannot be certain at this point.]
