- Interestingly in New Zealand we have exactly the opposite problem. NZ has very
- few freshwater native predators and the introduced trout have done very well.
- Recent moves to introduce "coarse" fish such as perch and catfish have been
- vigorously opposed by recreational groups because they might compete with the
- trout.
-
- Recently the Govt introduced recreational fishing quotas to combat
- poaching of comercial species of sea fish. Originally they put the bag limit at
- 5 of any species but the thought of arresting any child with more than 5
- bullies (tiny fish) in their possesion got the public a bit peeved.
-
- We are also up against the privatisation of water rights as part of Govt plans
- to sell off the power generation system. At the moment NZ'ers have right of
- access to "the Queen's Chain" a strip of land around all major waterways and
- lakes and the majority of lakes and rivers are public property.
-
- Management of the trout fisheries is controlled by "acclimatisation societies",
- wholey funded from license fees for trout fishing (about nz$55 per year). This
- keeps them a little removed from the Govt.
-
- Gone are the days when you went fishing to escape from politics!
