- The active constituent (other than nicotine) in cloves is luidinol. It is a
- local anesthetic as well as having some psychoactive properties. When taken
- orally it was found to be completely safe, but when poured down the throats
- of rats, it produced bleeding and blistering in the lungs and throat. I
- apologize for not having the references. I have talked to some friends who
- have had no health problems at all, despite high clove consumption, and
- I have talked to others who have had had definite problems with coughing
- up blood from pack+ /day clove habits. I smoke them occassionally, and
- have had no trouble at all (but I am not addicted, and only smoke one
- cigarette per month, so your mileage may vary.) One note I would like
- to make is that one particular "kind" of smoke is much less irratating
- to my lungs than even the smallest amount of tobacco smoke.
