- Well here it is Christmas Eve. I never thought it would take me this
- long to write a thank you note to Yuan Hsieh of the University of
- Utah. Earlier in the year he posted a message about the three micro
- pubs in Utah. I go out there every year to visit a friend of mine in
- Kaysville, just north of Salt Lake. Ever since our time in the Marine
- Corps we have gone backpacking somewhere in the West. Lots of time in
- the Wind Rivers of Wyoming. I enjoy it and also use it as an
- opportunity to get a couple of six-packs of Henry Weinhard's Dark
- Beer which I just love. I couldn't find it in the Salt Lake Valley
- last year but this year we drove east to the Wyoming border and found
- it just across the line.
-
- Anyway, I wanted to thank Yuan for telling me about Eddie McStiff's
- micro pub in Moah. He thought it was the best in Utah (first out of
- three?). My buddy, his son, another guy and two other kids went
- backpacking in Canyonlands park down near the Arizona border. On the
- way down I made them stop (all the other guys are Mormans) at Moah
- and visit Eddie's. But Eddie's doesn't open until after 3:00 P.M. (or
- is it noon?). Anyway I was able to talk them out of a bottle of the
- Wheat beer (22 ozs) and drink it on the trip down to the Canyonlands.
- Don't worry, my buddy was driving.
-
- We really enjoyed the trip. The weather was hot but the nights were
- comfortable. And we had fun exploring the Indian ruins in the cliffs.
- We did 27 miles in 4 days. We had to hike from spring to spring.
- But we all carry FIRST NEED, the water filters. On the way back we
- got to Moab in time for dinner and we had several LARGE pizzas at
- Eddie McStiff's. Either they were delicious or we were tired of the
- trail mix, jerky, cheese, and such we lived on on the trip.
-
- I told the waitress about hearing about Eddie's on the USENET. I
- ordered the Raspberry Wheat beer which was just as good as Yuan said
- it was. I also found you could order ALL the beers (7 kinds) in large
- shot glasses for 60 cents each. So I got to sample all. And I got a
- little tipsy as the last four days had sweated lots of H2O out of me
- and the alcohol went right to my head. The three Morman kids thought
- this was real funny as they don't often get to sit at a table where
- someone is drinking beer.
-
- The waitress had told the brewmaster about me and USENET. So she
- brought him out to meet me and we had a discussion about how they
- make the raspberry beer without it smelling like something died in
- it.
-
- If Yuan or anyone else makes it to Gainesville, FL where I'm on the
- faculty of the Department of Entomology, at UF, then visit the Market
- Street Pub downtown. It's not hard to find as Gainesville is only
- 80,000 people and downtown isn't big. The MArket Street Pub is one of
- the local micro pubs. The beers aren't bad. Another micro pub is at
- The Mill on Newberry Street (one of the main drags) out by the Oaks
- Mall. Oaks Mall is right by I-70 and can't be missed. It's the
- largest mall in north central Florida and I hate it. The Mill Eatery
- is in the annex to the mall. I've never tried their beer.
-
-
- There is a VERY active brew club in town which I should join.
- However, I'm a drinker and don't go in for the technical side of
- beer. The club meets downtown at the Market Street Pub. Right around
- the corner is the Hogtown Brew Store which carries at least 75 brands
- of beer. Hogtown is an old name for a section of Gainesville.
-
- Yuan. Thanks again!
