- Cable TV companies everywhere are raising their rates before the new federal
- law takes effect.
- On Monday, officials at Cablevision of Charlotte said most of their customers
- will pay 5% more, starting Feb. 1. But Cablevision President Jeff King denied
- his company's latest increase was timed to elude the federal government's
- still-unwritten rules, which take effect in April. "We're not trying to get
- under the wire," he said. "This is definitely part of our annual increase and
- it has to do with programming costs." (Yeah, right.) He would not disclose
- which channels have increased their programming rates.
- The cable companies are lowering "Basic" service, which includes local broad-
- cast stations, a cable preview guide and government and public access channels.
- "While the reduction (for basic service) has everything to do with the Cable
- Act, the increase (for other cable services) has nothing to do with the Cable
- Act." (Yeah, right.)
- In Charlotte, fewer than 10% of Cablevision 100,000 customers get basic
- service alone.
-
- Just if we had some competition... Was AT&T ever approved to provide cable
- services?
