- The engine code digit is (I believe) the eighth one. The book is right, you
- just used the wrong digit. I used to have a car like that- I think your
- engine code is "P". I think the fourth digit is the chassis line (ie, "J"
- car).

- Based on this description, I think you are talking about the dryer, a device
- that removes moisture and contamination (to a point) from the freon/oil mix
- in the system.

- Your system, if what I think is the problem, is definately open. I don't
- know what contaminants have worked their way into the compressor. However,
- provided you don't engage the A/C compressor (which usually also means
- defrost on GM cars), you won't lose performance, even if, as I believe has
- happened, the lack of oil and the contamination has started to sieze your
- compressor.
