- Hold on. Think about it a second. The oil pump is driven by the crankshaft
- in some fashion, often times off the distributor. That means the speed of
- the oil pump will vary with the engine rpms. When it's idling, the pump's
- turning slowly, so it doesn't have much output. So the pressure drops. It
- rises with rpm until it reaches a given pressure, when a relief valve opens
- to limit the pressure. So, pressure fluctuations are normal.

- When an engine is worn, the pressure will drop to nearly zero at idle. But
- a 23 psi at idle, and 40-60 pounds at speed is the sign of a very healthy
- engine.
