- I seemed to have generated a minor stir when I reported that
- the salesman I spoke to at American Audiophile Inc. "trashed Yamaha
- and Denon." Yes, now that I'm home and was able to check the specs,
- not only was he being ridiculous, he was downright wrong about what
- he said. He said that Yamaha/Denon have this great big warning
- that you can't hook up any speakers rated at less than 8 ohms. Well,
- I'm holding the brochure here in my hand for the Yamaha RX-460 55w/ch
- receiver:
-
- "Low Impedance Drive Capability:
-
- Speaker impedance can significantly influence music reproduction quality.
- And although speakers are rated at a certain level (such as 8 ohms), actual
- impedance will vary widely as the audio signal changes. Yamaha receivers
- have special low-impedance drive circuitry, enabling them to competently
- handle loads as low as 2 ohms."
-
- The salesman also said that Yamaha receivers don't have any bass,
- which is a totally unfounded claim anyway, so I ignored that too.
- But I do have to say I was taken by the Carver unit he was showing me
- anyway. The Carver receiver (HR-732, 60w/ch) looked so solidly constructed
- I could probably get away with tossing it off the roof of a building.
- According to Stereo buyers guide, all Carver receivers feature
- Sonic Holography, Ambience Enhancement, and Proprietary multipath
- suppression circuitry, but he didn't mention those features. I didn't
- look hard enough at the unit to see any markings/toggle switches for
- the first two though, so they might be there.
-
- Anyway, thanks to everyone who has helped so far. Now that I bought
- the Paradigm phantoms, I'm still looking at purchasing a receiver.
- People have steered me towards NAD, but most mentioned that Yamaha
- and Denon are good units. NAD makes a 40w/ch unit for the same money
- ($499) but I think the extra power on the Carver would be desirable,
- especially if I'm shelling out the extra $200 or so to pick up the
- Carver anyway (I just might do this, anyone agree/disagree?)
-
- Well, that's the story so far (-Fish, Marillion). Happy Holidays
- to everyone!
