  30. Amnesty International has strongly condemned the killing of Sergeant Nissim
  31. Toledano, a member of the Israeli Border Police who was taken hostage on 13
  32. December 1992 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and whose body was
  33. found two days later.  The organization had called on Hamas not to ill- treat
  34. or execute him and to release him as he was held as a hostage.  It regrets
  35. that its appeal has failed. Amnesty International is appealing to the Israeli
  36. authorities not to retaliate to the killing of Sergeant Toledano by deporting
  37. hundreds of Palestinians.  Over 400 Palestinians, said by the government to be
  38. supporters of Hamas and other Palestinian groups, were moved during the night
  39. of 16 December to near the border with Lebanon and are now reported to be held
  40. blindfold in buses awaiting deportation.  The Israeli High Court of Justice
  41. has ordered the government not to carry out the deportations until it reviews
  42. the decision.  It is currently meeting to do so. Amnesty International opposes
  43. the detention and forcible exile of individuals when such measures are imposed
  44. solely on account of their political or other beliefs, expressed without using
  45. of advocating violence.
