- Guatemalan Press Blasts Serrano
-
- The Council for the the Defense of the Rights of Journalists in
- Guatemala responded on Dec. 14 to President Jorge Serrano's
- charges that the press was "destablizing the democratic system" of
- Guatemala. Serrano also reminded the press that he is the
- Commander-and-Chief of the army, and defended that institution,
- saying that "when an army is unjustly accused of murder, it is
- impeded from the possibility of carrying out its appropriate
- function with dignity." The Council denounced Serrano's "threats"
- against freedom of expression as well as his accusations that the
- press is responsible for "everything bad."
-
- The press considers that Serrano did not keep his campaign
- promises and pointed out his "acts of arrogance" such as the
- slight he showed to Rigoberta Menchu, Nobel Peace Prize winner, by
- not receiving her until three days after knowing about the award.
- They also pointed out acts of corruption by the president and
- members of his family. (edlp 12/15/92 from AFP)
