  27. Americas Watch Asks Cuba for Sanchez's Release

  29. Dec. 14 the US-based human rights organization Americas Watch
  30. asked for the immediate release of Cuban opposition activist
  31. Elisardo Sanchez and Rodolfo Gonzales, along with 50 others who
  32. are considered [by Americas Watch] to be political prisoners. The
  33. communique released by Americas Watch condemned the threats and
  34. attacks allegedly orchestrated by Cuban authorities as well as
  35. what they termed the arbitrary arrest of human rights workers.

  37. According to Americas Watch, Sanchez, of the Cuban Commission on
  38. Human Rights and National Reconciliation (CCDHRN) was beaten and
  39. arrested on Dec. 20 by security forces. They said Sanchez remained
  40. "almost unconscious" as a result of the beating he received and
  41. was hospitalized in the military hospital "Carlos H. Finlay" in
  42. Havana, Cuba.

  44. Americas Watch said that Rodolfo Gonzaelz, a member of the Cuban
  45. Committee for Human Rigths (CCPDH) was also arrested, although
  46. they say they do not know his whereabouts. Others who were
  47. allegedly attacked were Gustavo Arcos, Jesus Yanes Pelletier and
