- War Officially Over in El Salvador
-
- In El Salvador both the government of President Alfredo Cristiani,
- and the followers of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front
- (FMLN) celebrated what was seen as the official end of the civil
- war on Dec. 15. The joint official "Act of Reconciliation" took
- place at the International Fair in El Salvador, followed by
- separate celebrations by the two opposing forces. Various Central
- American presidents, UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali
- and Dan Quayle, outgoing US Vice President, attended the
- ceremony, along with Spanish Vice President Narcis Sierra, and
- Dominican Vice President Carlos Morales.
-
- Expected to attend the FMLN celebration were former Nicaraguan
- President Daniel Ortega, the head of Colombia's M-19, Navarro
- Wolf, and Rigoberta Menchu, Guatemalan activist and recent winner
- of the Nobel Peace Prize. (edlp 12/15/92 from AP)
