  17. DEFENSE FUND ESTABLISHED FOR ACTIVIST

  19. John Shumaker, anti-nuclear and environmental Peace Acivist was
  20. arrested October 16, 1992 for criminal mischief -- a Class C felony -
  21. - in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He spent two and a half days in Black
  22. Hawk County jail in Waterloo, Iowa, and was relesed on his own
  23. recognizance.

  25. He maintains his innocence, but a defense fund is needed to pay for
  26. his legal defence. An outstanding environmental attorney, Wallace
  27. Taylor, is representing John, at $85 an hour. To cover these
  28. expenses, the John Shumaker Defense Fund has been established.

  34. John has been involved in the defense of Mother Earth since his
  35. graduation from the Univ. of Iowa in 1979. In 1984, in Portland,
  36. Oregon, he sat on the tracks to stop the nuclear White Train, and
  37. worked on the Oregon Ballot Measure 9, which was successfully
  38. passed to stop radioactive contamination of the Willamette River.
  39. He was on the Rogue River Walk in support of charges against
  40. Litton Industries' crimes against humanity through their
  41. involvement in nuclear weapons production.

  43. John walked in the Great Peace March of 1986, and the Michigan
  44. and New England Pilgrimages to Groton Conn. in 1987 to protest
  45. the Trident nuclear submarine production. Annually since then, he
  46. has witnessed at the Nuclear Test Site in Nevada, for a
  47. Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, and for the rights of the
  48. Western Shoshone Nation to the land of Newe Segobia, which was
  49. treatied to them in 1864.

  51. This summer, John participated in the Walk Across America for
  52. Mother Earth, but, returning home from the culminating Healing
  53. Global Wounds ceremony at the Nuclear Test Site, was arrested
  54. for an alleged act of civil disobedience.  Local coverage of the
  55. incident has slandered him, he maintains, injuring his family and
  56. greatly prejudicing the case.
