- WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 -- The top officers of the United Mine
- Workers of America (UMWA) will be inaugurated Tuesday,
- Dec. 22 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
- The rank-and-file election last month of UMWA President Richard
- Trumka, Vice President Cecil Roberts and Secretary-Treasurer
- Jerry Jones was certified today by the UMWA's international
- tellers, the officials charged with conducting UMWA elections.
- Trumka, Roberts and Jones were re-elected Nov. 10 with
- approximately 80 percent of the vote. The three union leaders will
- be sworn in to serve new five-year terms at inaugural ceremonies at
- the Sheraton Station Square Hotel, 7 Station Square Dr., in
- Pittsburgh. The program, which will begin at 11 a.m., is open to
- the public and the news media is invited to attend.
- Trumka and Roberts will both begin their third terms as ranking
- UMWA international officers. Jerry Jones, originally appointed to
- complete the unexpired term of retired Secretary-Treasurer John
- Banovic, now begins his first full term as one of the UMWA's top
- international officers.
- Trumka, a native of Nemacolin, Pa., is currently leading the
- UMWA in contract negotiations with the U.S. coal industry. This
- week the union leader is participating in President-elect Bill
- Clinton's Economic Conference in Little Rock, Ark.
- In addition to Trumka, Roberts and Jones, other officers to be
- sworn in Tuesday include 10 union auditors and tellers who were
- also chosen in last month's election. Clemmy F. Allen, Russell
- Stilwell, Bobby R. Webb, Donnie Samms and Bob Burchell will take
- the oath of office to serve as tellers. Richard Kulick, Harold
- "Babe" Erdos, Freddie Maynard, Jim Stevenson and Hughie MacArthur
- will also be sworn in as auditors. Like Trumka, Roberts and Jones,
- the auditors and tellers were elected to five-year terms of office.
- The UMWA has approximately 200,000 members throughout the
- United States and Canada.
