  24. Mexican Government Refutes Guilt in Camarena Murder
  25.  
  26. A communique issued by the Mexican Attorney General's office
  27. on Dec. 13 stated that former Mexican government officials are
  28. presumed to be innocent of charges brought against them by the
  29. US. Manuel Bartlett, former Minister of Government, and Juan
  30. Arevalo, former Minister of Defence, as well as the former head
  31. of the Justice Department, Enrique Alvarez, have been accused by
  32. the US of being involved in the killing of Enrique Camarena, an
  33. agent for the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and of drug
  34. trafficking. Camarena was killed in Guadalajara in 1985 after
  35. having been tortured. The Attorney General's office dismissed as
  36. invalid testimony against the three given by witnesses paid by
  37. the DEA. The communique also said that the case against Alvarez
  38. Machain, being tried in Los Angeles, California, is filled with
  39. holes. The Attorney General's office said firstly that Machain
  40. was kidnapped from Mexico in order to be tried in Los Angelas,
  41. and that the witnesses against him lack crediblity since they
  42. have previous criminal records and have been granted immunity by
  43. the DEA. Macahin, a medical doctor, is accused of having injected
  44. Camarena with drugs to keep him alive while he was being

  48. Mexico Names New Ambassador to US after Clinton Victory

  50. Mexico's president, Carlos Salinas de Gortari, named Jorge
  51. Montano as the new ambassador to the US, replacing Gustavo
  52. Petricioli. It is said that Petricioli was a personal friend of
  53. out-going US president George Bush. His replacement was named
  54. after Bill Clinton's victory in the US presidential elections.
  55. Montano is 47 years old, a career foreign service officer who,
  56. since Jan. 1989, has represented Mexico to the United Nations. He
  57. has a law degree from the Mexican National Autonomous University
  58. and a doctorate degree in Political Psychology from the
