- Mexican Government Refutes Guilt in Camarena Murder
-
- A communique issued by the Mexican Attorney General's office
- on Dec. 13 stated that former Mexican government officials are
- presumed to be innocent of charges brought against them by the
- US. Manuel Bartlett, former Minister of Government, and Juan
- Arevalo, former Minister of Defence, as well as the former head
- of the Justice Department, Enrique Alvarez, have been accused by
- the US of being involved in the killing of Enrique Camarena, an
- agent for the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and of drug
- trafficking. Camarena was killed in Guadalajara in 1985 after
- having been tortured. The Attorney General's office dismissed as
- invalid testimony against the three given by witnesses paid by
- the DEA. The communique also said that the case against Alvarez
- Machain, being tried in Los Angeles, California, is filled with
- holes. The Attorney General's office said firstly that Machain
- was kidnapped from Mexico in order to be tried in Los Angelas,
- and that the witnesses against him lack crediblity since they
- have previous criminal records and have been granted immunity by
- the DEA. Macahin, a medical doctor, is accused of having injected
- Camarena with drugs to keep him alive while he was being
- tortured. (edlp 12/14/92 from AFP)
