- MEXICO CITY POLLUTION WORSENS IN SUMMER MONTHS
-
- Mexico City, the most polluted city in the world, will soon enter
- its worst three-month period of the year. A flexible school
- schedule has been established to allow for school closings due to
- high levels of pollution. A campaign to purify the air includes
- planting 130 million trees and plans to close down industries as
- well as schools during the days when pollution levels are highest.
- The first of 23 centers have opened to analyze emissions from
- millions and millions of rented Volkswagons. Measures have also
- been taken against trucks and buses which emit high levels of
- pollutants. The Mexican oil company, PEMEX, says it has started
- selling a special kind of gasoline to reduce summer pollution.
-
- The government has demanded that private vehicles be inspected
- annually, and that the number of vehicles allowed to circulate
- during times of high pollution be limited. (edlp 12/10 from Mexico
- al Dia, AP) gasoline to reduce summer pollution. However, few hope
- for much improvement after a winter when pollution levels reached
- four times the "unacceptable" level. (edlp 12/10 from Mexico al
