  32.                   APPEAL TO EDINBURGH SUMMIT
  33.                     FOR ACTION OVER ANGOLA
  34.  
  35. The newly formed Angola Emergency Campaign will present an appeal
  36. to the European Summit for urgent action by the European
  37. Community to promote peace and democracy in Angola. It will take
  38. the form of a petition to Douglas Hurd, the current President of
  39. the European Council of Ministers.
  40.  
  41. A letter and petition will be delivered 
  42.  
  43.                            at 5.00pm
  44.                     on Thursday 10 December
  45.               at the South Gate, Holyrood Palace
  46.  
  47. Signatories to the petition include MPs, MEPs, Trade Unions, NGOs
  48. in Britain and Europe as well as some 2,000 supporters of the
  49. Campaign. The Angola Emergency Campaign was launched at a meeting
  50. at the House of Commons on 18 November in response to the crisis
  51. in Angola following the multi-party elections in Angola.

  53. The petition will be delivered by a deputation including:

  57. - Cllr Margaret McCulloch - Lothian Regional Council and
  58. National Steering Committee against Apartheid
  59. - Pat Kelly - General Council STUC

  61. - Brian Filling - Chair Scottish Committee AAM
  62. - John Mackinnon - Vice-Chair Scottish Committee AAM
  63. - Rev Professor John Riches

  65. The Petition calls, inter alia, upon "the British government and
  66. the European Community to ensure that the international
  67. community, especially the UN, takes effective action to support
  68. peace and democracy in Angola, including the provision of all
  69. necessary support for the Angolan government and the denial of
  70. both lethal and non-lethal support to UNITA, especially from
  71. apartheid South Africa."
