- APPEAL TO EDINBURGH SUMMIT
- FOR ACTION OVER ANGOLA
-
- The newly formed Angola Emergency Campaign will present an appeal
- to the European Summit for urgent action by the European
- Community to promote peace and democracy in Angola. It will take
- the form of a petition to Douglas Hurd, the current President of
- the European Council of Ministers.

- A letter and petition will be delivered

- at 5.00pm
- on Thursday 10 December
- at the South Gate, Holyrood Palace

- Signatories to the petition include MPs, MEPs, Trade Unions, NGOs
- in Britain and Europe as well as some 2,000 supporters of the
- Campaign. The Angola Emergency Campaign was launched at a meeting
- at the House of Commons on 18 November in response to the crisis
- in Angola following the multi-party elections in Angola.

- The petition will be delivered by a deputation including:

- National Steering Committee against Apartheid

- - John Mackinnon - Vice-Chair Scottish Committee AAM
- - Rev Professor John Riches

- The Petition calls, inter alia, upon "the British government and
- the European Community to ensure that the international
- community, especially the UN, takes effective action to support
- peace and democracy in Angola, including the provision of all
- necessary support for the Angolan government and the denial of
- both lethal and non-lethal support to UNITA, especially from
- apartheid South Africa."
