  36.    WIDE RANGE OF ITU* DOCUMENTS NOW AVAILABLE ON-LINE:
  37.   ITU STANDARDS TO BECOME ELECTRONICALLY ACCESSIBLE IN

  41. An  electronic  document distribution  service  providing
  42. remote  access  to  ITU  documents  -  TELEDOC  -  became
  43. operational last week.
  44.  
  45. Aimed  at  providing  fast  and  timely  access  to   ITU
  46. information to the world telecommunication and networking
  47. community, TELEDOC is a database containing at present:
  48.  
  49.    * CCITT and CCIR administrative documents
  50.    * lists of contributions (substantive input/proposals)
  51.      to CCITT and CCIR study groups
  52.    * lists of CCITT reports and Recommendations
  53.      (i.e. standards)
  54.    * summaries of CCITT new or revised Recommendations
  55.    * CCITT and CCIR meeting schedules and other
  56.      information concerning Study Groups structures
  57.      and activities.
  58.  
  59. As  from  early next year, the full texts of all new  and
  60. revised   CCITT   Recommendations  (i.e.  all   standards
  61. approved after the publication of the Blue Book in  1988)
  62. will  also  be available from TELEDOC. In line  with  ITU
  63. publications policies, it is envisaged to expand  TELEDOC
  64. information  base  according  to  identified  needs   and
  65. available resources.

  67. On  TELEDOC's  first  day  of operation,  ITU  Secretary-
  68. General  Pekka  Tarjanne  stated:  "The  impact  of   the
  69. changing   telecommunications   environment   makes    it
  70. imperative  that  the ITU develop new approaches  to  the
  71. standardization process and find new ways to improve  the
  72. efficiency  of  our  work, new ways  to  disseminate  the
  73. output   of   our   work  throughout   the   world.   The
  74. implementation  of TELEDOC", he said, "is  undoubtedly  a
  75. right  step  in this direction. Our ultimate goal  is  to
  76. make available on-line an entire library of ITU documents
  77. for a broad and transparent information exchange with all
  78. categories of interested users".

  80. TELEDOC  is  based  on  a  X.400  document  server  which
  81. processes  requests  sent  in  by  electronic  mail.  The
  82. TELEDOC Auto-Answering Mailbox accepts messages from  the
  83. two  most widely used E-mail systems: X.400 and Internet.
  84. Users without direct access to X.400 or Internet mail can
  85. use  gateway services provided by major service providers
  86. (e.g. MCI or Compuserve). The electronic mail address  of
  87. TELEDOC Auto-Answering Mailbox (TAM) is:

  122. *     The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was
  123. founded  in  1865  and  as  such  is  the  oldest  inter-
  124. governmental   organization.  In  1947,   it   became   a
  125. specialized  agency  of  the United  Nations  and  has  a
  126. membership of 174 countries (4 November 1992). It is  the
  127. international organization responsible for the regulation
  128. and  planning  of telecommunications worldwide,  for  the
  129. establishment   of   equipment  and   systems   operating
  130. standards,  for  the  coordination and  dissemination  of
  131. information  required for the planning and  operation  of
  132. telecommunications services and within the United Nations
  133. system  for  the  promotion of and  contribution  to  the
  134. development   of  telecommunications  and   the   related
