- Actually, I was trying to (in my own inept way) point out that
- it's very nice to publish amazingly high SPEC thruput numbers for the
- SMP machines like the 1000 running VMS but that for SMP applications
- the operating system is *NOT* interchangeable. I am totally VMS illiterate
- and I don't know whether VMS handles SMP more or less efficiently than
- DEC OSF/1's early versions. I actually *DON'T* know a whole lot about
- DEC OSF/1 internals and capabilities. I remember reading various remarks
- (from other places than internally) about OSF's SMP needing work, and
- I really don't know what DEC's done with it.(*)
- I assume that SMP will be supported for all the multiprocessor
- boxes, or I can't imagine anyone'd have the gall to sell one to someone
- who wanted to run OSF on it. On the other hand, it'd be nice to see a
- few *UNIX* benchmarks for the big thumpers.
