  25.     Actually, I was trying to (in my own inept way) point out that
  26. it's very nice to publish amazingly high SPEC thruput numbers for the
  27. SMP machines like the 1000 running VMS but that for SMP applications
  28. the operating system is *NOT* interchangeable. I am totally VMS illiterate
  29. and I don't know whether VMS handles SMP more or less efficiently than
  30. DEC OSF/1's early versions. I actually *DON'T* know a whole lot about
  31. DEC OSF/1 internals and capabilities. I remember reading various remarks
  32. (from other places than internally) about OSF's SMP needing work, and
  33. I really don't know what DEC's done with it.(*)
  34.     I assume that SMP will be supported for all the multiprocessor
  35. boxes, or I can't imagine anyone'd have the gall to sell one to someone
  36. who wanted to run OSF on it. On the other hand, it'd be nice to see a
  37. few *UNIX* benchmarks for the big thumpers.
