  18. At my current client's location, we installed 9 BusLogic SCSI-2 compliant
  19. (note the keyword *compliant*) controllers in 3 486 50Mhz servers.  The
  20. model number we installed is the KT-542B version for ISA buses (they have
  21. other models for MCA an EISA as well.) These controllers support up to
  22. 7 SCSI devices each of which can be up to 8 gigabyte drives (or tapes,
  23. CD-ROMs, whathaveyou) and provide appropriate mapping of cylinder geometry
  24. that avoids the BIOS hangup over 1024 cylinders.  This of course does not
  25. matter for U*ix systems.  They come with drivers for DOS, OS/2 and Netware
  26. as well as a replacement driver for ISC and SCO vintages.

  28. Above I noted that the device is SCSI-2 compliant -- this means that it
  29. supports the command set enhancements of SCSI-2 *but* may NOT necessarily
  30. support specific drives rated as SCSI-2 due to bandwidth limitations (I
  31. believe they will support up to 10 megabyte per second disk tranfers in
  32. burst mode.  They will support up to 20 megabyte transfers over the ISA
  33. bus.)  Typically, you're looking at a better controller for present SCSI
  34. devices.  They also seem to have solved the memory addressing problem above
  35. 16 megabytes although I cannot confirm this as yet.

  37. You may have noted that was 9 controllers in 3 boxes.  This is what can be
  38. supported on the ISA bus -- MCA and EISA will support four controllers.
