- I just finished a book entitled "Understanding DCE" by Ward Rosenberry, David
- Kenney and Gerry Fisher. It's published by O'Reilly and Associate, who
- publish many excellent books on open systems topics.
-
- Understanding DCE is aimed at someone who expects to have to deal with, in
- some fashion, the distributed communications environment from the Open
- Software Foundation (OSF). DCE includes a distributed file system, time,
- security and naming services which are based on remote procedure calls (RPCs).
- This book is a very good introduction into what's in OSF's DCE and how the
- pieces work and work together.
-
- What's most impressive to me about the book is that you can actually read it
- without either falling asleep or losing interest and quitting. This is
- important because DCE is what most of us are going to be copying with over
- time. Digital, along with most other major vendors, is committed to using DCE
- for intersystem services, replacing Sun's Open Network Computing (ONC), which
- includes the network file system (NFS) and Sun RPC's. DCE is a more
- functional, more secure technology that is creeping into the world of open
- systems. At the Fall '92 DECUS, Digital showed off DCE-based software running
- between VMS, OSF/1, MS-Windows and Windows/NT. A DCE started kit for OSF/1 is
- shipping from DEC now. DCE for MS-Windows is available from Gradient
- Technologies now as well. DCE for VMS is expected to be available sometime in
- the first half of 1993.
-
- If you are interested in learning about DCE and starting to evaluate how it
- will effect you, I highly recommend Understanding DCE.
