  16. Here are some random tasks that our students have done recently:
  17.    --modified the existing backup script
  18.    --script to go through online tape logs (from dump) and pick out
  19.      old tapes
  20.    --script to run du and send mail to all users with over a certain
  21.      number of blocks used (actually the sysprog wrote it but ops
  22.      modified it)
  23.    --script to list all files, with full pathname, sorted in
  24.      descending size order 
  25.    --(another one the sysprog did) script to list all members of a 
  26.       given group by name and userid
  27.    --find all users with more than one home directory and
  28.      reconcile....
  29.    -- one ambitious student installed both swais and gopher, 
  30.       He had previously re-written a PD help system to work on
  31.       our machines.

  33. Lessee, what else isn't too hard:
  34.  -- checking bad blocks and re-partitioning a disk (check with Sr
  35.     Sysadm to confirm partition table)
  36.  -- changing a workstation from dataless to diskless client and back
  37.  -- upgrading an OS, or installing an OS . If you have a spare
  38.     workstation to play with for a week, strip it bare of software and
  39.     then bring it up to full membership in your system.

  41. We expect all of our students to be able to do full and incremental
  42. dumps and restores. If you aren't already responsible for that, take
  43. it over. On our site, requests for restores are SO frequent that any
  44. backup system gets "checked" automatically.
