- Here are some random tasks that our students have done recently:
- --modified the existing backup script
- --script to go through online tape logs (from dump) and pick out
- old tapes
- --script to run du and send mail to all users with over a certain
- number of blocks used (actually the sysprog wrote it but ops
- modified it)
- --script to list all files, with full pathname, sorted in
- descending size order
- --(another one the sysprog did) script to list all members of a
- given group by name and userid
- --find all users with more than one home directory and
- reconcile....
- -- one ambitious student installed both swais and gopher,
- He had previously re-written a PD help system to work on
- our machines.
-
- Lessee, what else isn't too hard:
- -- checking bad blocks and re-partitioning a disk (check with Sr
- Sysadm to confirm partition table)
- -- changing a workstation from dataless to diskless client and back
- -- upgrading an OS, or installing an OS . If you have a spare
- workstation to play with for a week, strip it bare of software and
- then bring it up to full membership in your system.
-
- We expect all of our students to be able to do full and incremental
- dumps and restores. If you aren't already responsible for that, take
- it over. On our site, requests for restores are SO frequent that any
- backup system gets "checked" automatically.
-
- This is all off the top of my head. We do give students a lot of room.
