- At our company, all UNIX boxes and all VMS boxes are connected with
- each other over the same ethernet. The UNIX boxes communicate via
- TCP/IP, the VMS boxes via DECNET. Also, one of the VMS machines is
- running VMS-ULTRIX connection, so that we have a TCP/IP link between
- both worlds. All this works fine.
-
- Now, a customer has provided us with a demo version of some software
- which we will be extending in the future. The problem is, that we can
- not provide a fitting IP host address (with the leading numbers
- matching) for the machine. It seems that the IP address is hard coded
- in the demo software.
-
- When we hook this machine up to the ethernet, it is not possible to
- telnet etc. between this machine and the rest of our lan. We get
- "network unreachable".
-
- Is there any way, we could establish a connection? (Besides changing
- the IP addresses of all other hosts). I mentioned our VMS-ULTRIX
- connection, because it shows, that it can't be a principal hardware
- problem. The VAX manages to talk in two different PROTOCOLS with only
- one ethernet interface, so why shouldn't a Sun be able to talk in two
- different IP nets with one interface. But all I have read on this
- topic leads me to believe, that we would need a UNIX host with two
- ethernet interfaces to make the connection.
-
- Btw, the mismatching machine is a PC running SCO/ODT and we also have
- machines running HP-UX 8.0 and SunOS 4.1.1B. Any suggestions anyone?
