- Actually, I've been unable to use it to convert from any format but Mac
- font files. It will convert to many file formats for many machines,
- but the input has to be a Mac font (as far as I know).
-
- It doesn't create the font wrappers, but if you know how to use the
- mkdir and mv commands, it's no problem at all (shell scripts come in
- really handy here). The version I've got also has a problem with
- naming fonts properly (bold, italic, etc.). I'm not sure about the
- very latest version though. This is easily fixable, and I suspect
- Altsys has done so.
-
- Also, since most of the PD/Shareware fonts available on Mac archives
- are in Binhex and either Stuffit! or Compact Pro archives (which
- neither Meta Pro nor MetroTools will uncompress), it might be more
- convenient to be on a Mac (since the tools to uncompress the fonts
- exist on the Mac for free). In System 7 you can even have three
- programs active concurrently (not really multitasking, but I'm not
- going to get into Mac bashing).
-
- In short, I find it way more convenient to have Meta Pro (which I
- bought) and UnStuffit! (which uncompresses both Compact Pro and most
- Stuffit! archives) going on a speedy System 7 Mac so I can convert tons
- of fonts at once, ftp the whole mess to the NeXT and run a simple shell
- script to fix the names and make .font folders. The font name editing
- I do by hand because some of the changes that need to be made are way
- over the capacity of any fancy UNIX filter. If you can't handle making
- a short UNIX shell script for renaming and folder creation, you might
- be better off with the font installer in MetroTools. This task is
- totally doable with shell scripts though (and you can save yourself
- some dough along the way).
