  28. mfrc is pretty good and should still be around. It has its
  29. limitations, however.

  31. What it does:

  33. Sorts through POST resource in a Mac PostScript font and
  34. emits something pretty close to what the NeXT needs in the
  35. way of an outline file.

  37. What it doesn't do:
  38.  
  39. Perform any kind of installation procedure
  40. Create .FONT wrappers
  41. Bundle in the AFM file
  42. Name the file correctly in many cases (due to a bug)
  43. Distinguish between Binary and ASCII encoded sections
  44.     (it assumes that they are all binary and converts
  45.     them to ASCII) 
  46. Handle very many Mac file formats:
  47.     MacBinary Support is weak - some flavors don't work
  48.     No support for Mac floppies under NeXTSTEP 3.0
  49.     No support for raw resource forks from 
  50.         FloppyWorks
  51.         MacLink Plus/PC
  52.  
  53. In short, mfrc is quite likely still on the archives but if
  54. you use it be prepared to do an amount of hand-tweaking to
  55. make the fonts work when you're done.

  57. If you're interested in a commerccial alternative there
  58. are two: Metamorphosis Pro which runs on a Mac and
  59. MetroTools which runs on a NeXT.

  61. Meta Pro provides conversion to and from many font file
  62. formats and will generate AFM files. It doesn't create
  63. .FONT wrappers and since it runs on a Mac, it can't really
  64. help with the installation - plus you need a Mac. I haven't
  65. tried it under Executor. If you use  Meta Pro for any volume
  66. of fonts, be prepared to do a lot of work by hand to get them
  67. installed on the NeXT.

  69. MetroTools requires AFM files for the fonts you wish to
  70. convert, but handles all the other aspects of font
  71. installation transparently. We will release a version
  72. sometime in January or February that generates AFM
  73. files.
