- I have a NeXTdimension with both floppy and OD, but I would like to learn how
- to maintain the ODD to prevent it from going bad. I've heard about the
- occassional ODD going bad, so I don't want to neglect mine and end up in the
- same situation. I think I remember that Spherical Solutions or perhaps some
- other company was offering refurbished drives at decent prices. Actually, I'd
- like to learn how to "refurbish" mine own drive, or at how to maintain it in
- top working order.
-
- Maintenance tips for the floppy would be appreciated as well, although I've
- never been much of a fan of inserting abrasive "automatic" cleaners into a
- floppy drive to accelerate head wear...
-
- Thanks.

- I have been using an original NeXTCube with optical happily for four
- years with essentially no problems. (I did have one optical [of 5]
- that refused to mount -- kept respinning. I reformatted it and still
- use it without any more problems.) I think my secret is that I followed
- the original warning to keep the cube off the carpet. Since day 1,
- my machine has been on a plank cut slightly larger than the Cube's
- footprint. The only maintenance done re the optical was that I had
- small computer support vacuum and clean the drive with the NeXT
- (I assume) supplied kit after I had the single problem with an
- optical disk.
-
- By the way, the machine has been running essentially
- continuously (I'm on my second monitor -- the first one dimmed out).
