- When I went to install 3.0, I ran the prep program on the floppy,
- but then got interrupted and never finished installing from
- the CD-ROM. After a few days I noticed that my sound wasn't working
- (this is not my current problem, I eventually figured out that it
- was because of the interrupted install, and I've finished installing 3.0).
-
- I got pissed and tried all kinds of things to get it working.
- Eventually I got the idea in my head that the battery backed
- up memory was munged or something (I was really desperate at this
- point), so I opened up the case and took out the battery to
- clear the memory.
-
- Well, when I went to put the battery back in, the NeXT powered
- up right away! (It was plugged in so I could ground myself on
- the power supply). This gave me a sick feeling in my stomach
- because the keyboard and monitor were sitting on the other side
- of the room not attached.
-
- So, now my machine has this little quirk in that it needs to be shut
- off twice before it stays off. If I power down, it goes through all
- the usual stuff, then it shuts the power off (the monitor goes off,
- makes the clicking sound and all), then it powers right back on again.
- In order to get it to shut down, I have to wait until it gets far
- enough into it's boot sequence to recognize the power key, and
- power it off a second time. This time it stays off.
-
- If I wait too long the second time, it won't stick. If I listen
- carefully I can even tell when the point-of-no-return passes because
- the fan seems to speed up slightly.
-
- My machine don't seem to have the extra "power one" features of
- the newer machines (I don't get the preferences section for it).
-
- Does anyone have any ideas? Could it be the power supply? (I've
- already replaced one power supply). Anybody seen this before?
