- NOOOOO!!!!
-
- Just Say No to Unicode!
-
- Jon W{tte seems to imply that Unicode is a solution, but it is nothing but
- a problem.
-
- One of my examples....
-
- A year ago when the Unicode book became available I immediately rushed to
- see if it was biased by American English Speaking Computer people. It was,
- and to my horror the octothorpe symbol was #define-ed as something like
- the word "pound_sign"! Ha! I've heard people in computers refer to the
- octothorpe symbol as "hash mark" "scratch mark" "crosshatch" and other
- words including the mistaken phrase "pound sign". Americans may have
- called the symbol "pound sign" merely because it is customary abbreviation
- for a weight unit when jotted down on paper (just as " = inches and ' =
- feet) But of course for hundreds of years the one TRUE "pound sign" has
- always been reserved as a sybbol denoting monetary units used in british
- controlled areas of the world (looks like a cursive upper case "L").
-
- So imagine my glee when I flipped frenzied through the unicode standard
- book to see how the REAL "pound sign" (not the octothorpe symbol) wase
- #define-ed..... ARGGGH! I recal it being the same as the octohorpe but
- with a single case difference!!!! Thats right! It was #define-ed as
- something similar to "Pound_sign"
-
-
- I don't know if this arrogant anti-Pascal language crap has been fixed but
- I took it as a simple indicator that Unicode is a totally useless and
- shitty hack. Imagine if ASCII (for Americans) had been accidentally
- mangled by a rushed implementation all these years (an ommision of the
- semicolon for example). You can see how important a standard needs to be
- evaluated and examined.
