- It is possible to cram an entire System folder onto a Maxima RAM disk:
- The System Folder on my 80 MB internal weighs in at 6.9 MB, and I've
- managed to futz all of its capabilities onto a 6 MB Maxima RAM disk.
- Aliases are the key...
-
- 1. You don't have to copy the StartupScreen over, since a Maxima-
- equipped Mac first boots off the System Folder on the hard drive
- (so displaying the StartupScreen), and then switch-boots the RAM
- disk.
-
- 2. Place aliases of items on the hard drive's Apple Menu Items into the
- RAM disk's Apple Menu Items. Ditto for the Startup Items folder.
-
- 3. Alias control panels that don't contain INIT code, and thus don't
- show up in the boot sequence.
-
- 4. The majority of the space on the RAM disk will be occupied by the
- System file. I haven't tried this, but you might get more savings
- if you used Suitcase II or some other such ilk and moved all your
- fonts off to the hard drive.
-
- 5. The rest will be taken up by INITs and preference files. Not much
- you can do about these.
-
- After all these measures, the System Folder on my RAM disk weighs in
- at 5.3 MB. I try to keep at least 500 K slack space for the print spool.
-
- For applications, I use a 4 MB AppDisk. The nice thing about AppDisk is
- that if you need more elbow room, you can immediately get it by quitting
- AppDisk. Also, you can resize it without rebooting.
-
- This still leaves me 7 MB usable memory for applications and the System.
- This is usually more than sufficient...
-
- Hope this helps.
