-
- Go external. That way you still get 2 floppies, and if you upgrade from the
- SE, you just unplug the external HD and plug it in to your new machine. I
- would say don't get anything less than 200MB.
-
- >2. I need RAM. Can I use 1X9's or do I need 1X8's? Are

-
- You need 1 meg 1x8's. You can only go up to 4 meg on the motherboard of the
- SE. There is a resistor you will have to cut (or a jumper you will have to
- move) to go to 4 meg. You should get detailed instructions with your chip
- order from where ever you buy them.
-
- >3. I want to accelerate this machine with a 68020 or 030.
- >What boards are the best and cheapest?
-
- I think the best are the Daystar Powercache family of accelerators. One of
- the big advantages is that if you decide to upgrade from your SE, you just
- buy a different adapter card for your Powercache, and you can use it in your
- new machine. They run from about $500 to $1300 depending on the speed and
- FPU. There are cheaper accelerators for the SE; I've seen 25MHz for about
- $300 (look in the back of MacWorld/MacUser).
-
- >4. I would like to add a FDHD. Is this possible without

-
- You have to get a motherboard upgrade if you go internal. I think there are
- external FDHD's that don't require an upgrade. You'd have to look into it.
-
- >5. How much does System 7.1 cost? Can I install it with

-
- I think just the disks are $35 direct from Apple. Disks + manuals is $79
- through MacConnection, etc. You would have to ask about 800k floppies.
-
- >6. What other options can I add to make this machine HOT?
-
- You could get an external portrait monitor. You would be surprised what the
- extra screen space will do for you.
-
- You might also consider upgrading to an SE/30 motherboard. You get color
- capability (with a card), 8 simm slots, stereo sound, FDHD ability, virtual
- memory ability, and a considerably faster machine. Then add a video card
- and 13" (at least) color monitor.
