  13.     I'm thinking about buying a mac portable. It has a horizontal
  14. line across lower part of the screen. The owner says that it has been
  15. there since the machine was almost new: it showed up just after the
  16. 90-day warranty expired. He said Apple told him it was a design
  17. defect.

  19. If that's true, there must be a lot of portables with that defect. The
  20. deal is good enough that I can live with a few dead pixels--- I just
  21. want to make sure it's not a sign that the display is about to blow: I
  22. imagine that's a _very_ expensive proposition on a portable.
