- As busses go, SCSI is relatively temperamental. Apple's treatment of
- it with their 25 pin connector exacerbates the problem. SCSI 'wants'
- to be carried on wire pairs of signal and ground. Apple threw away
- the 'redundant' grounds in order to use a connector that took up
- less panel space. Since SCSI also wants to be terminated at the extreme
- ends, Apple makes matters even worse by not including termination
- inside the Mac.
-
- If you have a 'good' cable from your Mac to your first drive,
- i.e. one that carries the signals as twisted pairs and then
- ties all the grounds together at the 25 pin connector end, you
- should have relatively good luck. If you have a lower quality
- cable that carries only 25 wires the entire way, you can easily
- have the kind of problem you describe.
-
- I suggest you use the shortest possible, highest quality cable
- you can get for connecting the Mac to the first drive. Try to
- keep all the other cables short, too. Using a very short first
- cable also gets that termination closer to the end of the string.

-
- Please do not do this. You WILL fry something.

- Best of luck,
