- Hi there,
-
- I just purchased an ATI Graphics Ultra+ card and am having all kinds
- of problems trying to get it to work. My problem is that Windows
- dies upon loading when I try to use the Mach32 drivers that came
- with the ATI card. My system is an ISA 486/33 with an AHA1542B
- SCSI controller and a Fujitsu drive.
-
- Everytime I start Windows, the logo is displayed normally. But right after
- that, I see a bit of garbage flashing quickly on my screen. Then the
- Program Manager comes up, and everything freezes. After two days of trying
- everything I could think of, I finally traced the problem to my SCSI controller.
- It just happened that my other computer (a 386DX25) has an IDE drive. So I
- took out the 1542B and pluged in an IDE card with the "borrowed" IDE drive from
- my other machine. Windows and the Mach32 drivers worked flawlessly on my 486
- with the IDE drive.
-
- My 1542B uses the default settings (DMA 5, IRQ11, DC00, base addr 330H etc.).
- Regular VGA and 8514/a drivers that came with Win31 worked fine with the ATI
- card, so I don't think it's a hardware problem. The ATI card uses base address
- 2e8-2ef. I have tried excluding the ROM location in SYTEM.INI and config.sys
- (X=C000-C7FF) with no success. I have also tried different DMA and IRQ settings
- on my 1542B. I am using ASPI4DOS,SYS driver dated 6-20-91. Is there a newer
- one available? The memory aperture feature of the ATI card is another
- possibility, for that is the main difference between the 8514/A driver and
- the mach32 drivers. As I said, 8514/a driver works fine except it is a
- bit slower and has no virtual desktop support. Any other suggestions?
-
- Thanks.
