  13.    I'm shopping around to replace an old, creaky XT with a 486 before starting a PhD
  14. program next summer.  Unfortunately, it's very easy to get wrapped up in all the hype
  15. about different systems and what they do and do not have.
  16.    One system that looked pretty good was the NEC PowerMate 433 (486/33MHz) that comes
  17. bundled with a 240 MB drive, 8MB RAM and a NEC 3FGx monitor for $2499 direct from NEC.
  18. Does anyone have any comments about this system, or what I should look at as an
  19. alternative.
  20.    By the way, the main use for this computer will be numerical analysis (Matlab,
  21. possibly Maple), and document preparation.
