- I'm shopping around to replace an old, creaky XT with a 486 before starting a PhD
- program next summer. Unfortunately, it's very easy to get wrapped up in all the hype
- about different systems and what they do and do not have.
- One system that looked pretty good was the NEC PowerMate 433 (486/33MHz) that comes
- bundled with a 240 MB drive, 8MB RAM and a NEC 3FGx monitor for $2499 direct from NEC.
- Does anyone have any comments about this system, or what I should look at as an
- alternative.
- By the way, the main use for this computer will be numerical analysis (Matlab,
- possibly Maple), and document preparation.
