- Recently I've been trying to fix a friends Olivetti M16 laptop
- computer. There appears to be a fault with the hard disk since
- it is not recognised at boot up. It appears as if the disk is
- having problems spinning up to speed.
-
- Having assumed (correctly I hope) that the problem lies with
- the disk and therefore needs to be replaced I am left with the
- problem of not knowing which type to buy. (I know its an IDE drive)
-
- From previous experience, I've been able to fit just about any
- drive to any PC and with the BIOS setup routine it is possible to
- set features such as block size, num of sectors landing zone etc.
- However with this olivetti machine the setup gives you only three
- options type 1, type 2, and type 3 (20MB, 40MB & 100MB respectively).
-
- My friend is convinced that the drive was a 40MB device however
- the serial number on the bottom of the case does not seem to imply
- this (xx3xxxxxxxx).
-
- Is the best solution to buy an identical device to that currently
- fitted (CONNER CP044 ? ... if my memory serves me correctly)?
- or is it possible to use any IDE drive and inform the machine
- as to the correct disk parameters.
-
- I feel that there may be some problems in obtaining a identical
- replacement drive and also the performance of such a drive is not
- particularly good by todays standards. An olivetti dealer has
- quoted a ridiculously high price (500 pounds) to repair the
- machine, which considering todays laptop prices seems pointless
- paying.
-
-
- Any help will be gratefully received.
