- I am trying to get to grips with the different types and formats of hard
- drives that are available.
- I am ok on the scsi i/f standard, but I'm not too sure on mfm/rll
- standards.
-
- As I understand it, mfm and rll are different data formatting methods and
- these drives use the ST412 or ST506 interface. My questions are as
- follows:
-
-
- -What is the difference between ST412 and ST506 - old controller cards
- seem to all have the same connections (34 and 20-way data, plus power)
- for hard disks. (Is one of them the standard used for floppies?).
-
- -Can an 'MFM' disk drive use both mfm or rll, as dictated by the
- controller type ?
-
- -How can you tell what sort of controller you have ?
-
-
- I am slowly getting the hang of the different specifications in use, but
- they don't make it any easier by referring to drives sometimes by the
- format type and sometimes by the interface type !
- An e-mail reply would be preferred, if possible.
