- Well, I haven't checked out the latest prices. but about a year ago
- when i bought my 486, i was also considering assembling my own machine.
- however, after calculating the total price, i realized that teh difference
- was about $30-$50. i ended up just buying the whole system from a
- vendor. my reasoning was:
-
- (1) the seller will often charge you less for a particular part if you
- buy the whole system (i.e. $50 for a disk controller, but you
- the system seller might only charge you $45)
-
- (2) there's no worring about whether hte individual pieces will be
- compatible w/ eachother because typically, the system seller
- knows it better than you (unless you are very well knowledged)
-
- (3) if you have a problem, there'll be someone real to talk to (other
- than begging for help on the net ;) [i.e., when i recently
- lost the settings for my hd, i just went back to where i got
- it and asked.] plus, the people might be more willing to help
- if they know that you bought hte system from them.
-
- of course, the above only applies if you are able to find a good vendor.
- i'm just speaking from two happy purchases.
-
- as for books, isn't that one book "inside the ibm pc" (i think it's by
- peter norton) pretty good?
-
- also, while i was by the newstand not too long ago, i remember that on
- the cover of this one magazine it said "building your own 486". i don't
- recall the name of the magazine off the top-of-my-head, but it was not
- one of the big ones (i.e. pc magazine, pc world) i'm pretty sure your
- local waldenbooks should have it. (unless it was from the past few
- months)
