- A good source of introductory ftp and Internet related files can be found at
- pilot.njin.net (128.6.7.38) in the pub/ftp-list directory. I just checked
- it... there's a README file there, get that first if you're completely clueless
- as to what you're looking at when you get there.
-
- How to get there (if the address and directory is enough, skip the rest!)
- --- -- --- -----
-
- First, the hard part: start your FTP program and open a channel. It's hard to
- be specific here since each program varies a little bit. A variation on the
- following will hopefully work:
-
- 1. FTP pilot.njin.net
- -or- FTP 128.6.7.38
-
- If you're being prompted for a username, type
-
- 2. anonymous
-
- and skip down to 5.
-
- If not:
-
- 3. login anonymous
-
- If this still doesn't work (the program says something about no connection):
-
- 4. open pilot.njin.net
- -or- open 128.6.7.38
-
- and then either step 2. or 5. depending on what the system does.
-
- 5. The system should now be asking you for a password. Don't worry! Just
- type in your e-mail address. You should now be connected.
-
- 6. cd pub
- cd ftp-list
- dir
-
- This puts you in the right directory and lists it. Figure out what files
- you want to get. For each one, type
-
- 7. get filename
-
- If the files end up garbled, you may need to precede this with
-
- 8. ascii
-
-
- Finally, when you're all done:
-
- 9. bye
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Once you get this working, you'll find that most anonymous-FTP sites work
- pretty much the same way. If you're still stuck, feel free to e-mail me
- (although I suspect I may regret saying that...), please be as system specific
- as you can; or, nag your local
-
- sysop/system manager/system administrator/<insert title here>
-
- who should hopefully know something about anonymous FTP, or at least about the
- program you're using.
-
- Happily, most of this stuff isn't nearly as complicated or difficult as it
- sounds.
-
- Happy FTP'ing!!
