- OK. Here's one "always wanted to learn but never had the time, etc
- etc" guy. Any help for those beginners who would like to learn? Specifically,
- what resources are available? IE, if I wanted to write a desktop program, what
- should I look for, watch out for, or a DA, or a init, etc etc. What books are
- good? What language? Assembly? What about actual source code examples?
- Anyone willing to contribute source examples?
- From what I can see, there's a very steep learning curve in the
- beginning, but once you are over it, you are over it. The problem is getting
- over it...
- I have an idea for a da/init. Upon boot up and when it crosses
- midnight, it would check a designated appleworks classic/gs db file for names
- and birthdays and stick in either on a line at the bottom of the screen or in a
- window or make a sign somewhere that there's yet again someone you forgot to
- send a birthday card to. Probably a program of no value, but I had always
- wanted something to do that. My problem is, HOW do I write something like
- that? Lots of things I don't understand. How to check when it crosses
- midnight? I mean, that part I know, but how do you let a program "know"
- when it's midnight, and time for it to come out of the closet? Obviously you
- can't have the program continuous check the time... (even under GNO... :)
- Which brings up another point... how do you program for shell?)
- I suppose it's time to shell out for an assemble/compiler... Which one
- should I pick up (ie, best price/performance/support)?
- Any replies, comments, helps and hints are very welcomed. Oh yeah, I
- have access to VMS, Ultrix and Unix manuals too, and if there's any good stuff
- there, do tell.
- Ciao.
