  11.     There may have been previous threads on this subject which I
  12. missed, because I did not realize at the time that it was pertinent.  So if
  13. this is all old stuff, please skip this message.  In any case, I would 
  14. appreciate any corrections to factual errors.

  16.     We had a system crash (VMS 5.5-1).  My rudimentary analysis of
  17. the crash dump showed "unexpected system service exception".  Further
  18. analysis by DEC showed that it was due to use of XWATCH/SPY, by Nick
  19. deSmith, 1991 OCTOBER 10, even though we had used this product successfully
  20. many times before.

  22.     The DEC engineer said
  23. 1) They have 2 or 3 calls a day on crashes caused by this. It writes into
  24. the non-paged memory pool (which is not in itself a bad thing), but
  25. the product is basically older and unsupported.
  26. 2) A typical supported 3rd-party product, but costly, would be Peek-and-Spy. 
  27. 3) DEC is working on a similar product in collaboration with Clyde Digital.

  29.     Thus I looked in the Info-VAX Monthly Posting.  This pointed me
  30. toward the Supervisor Series.  I hope this will be a reasonable, inexpensive
  31. cure [please correct me, especially if it too can cause crashes].  If 
  32. other people are in the same difficulty,
  33. Supervisor can be obtained from FTP.SPC.EDU.  I chose to
  34. use the file service FILESERV@WKUVX1.BITNET, with the message in the text
  35. SEND SUPERVISOR.  This gives 33 parts that take a lot of straightforward
  36. but repetitive editting.  This is being taken apart, even as we speak,
  37. by TPU in vaxshare; surprisingly this process has taken over an hour now.
  38.     Thus I hope I am not premature or misleading in my suggested cure.
  39. But I did want to warn people about the crashes, and it seems reasonable
  40. to have the rest of the material in this same message.
