- I'm not sure my first post got through, so I'll post again. I've been trying
- to get some 256 colour bitmaps to display on my WPS background and have had
- no success. It seems that the pictures have been reduced in the number of
- colours, perhaps to 16. I tried both Windows 3.0 .BMP's and OS/2 version
- 1.1 .BMP's with no luck either way.
-
- Questions:
-
- 1) How do I display 256 colour bitmaps in the background?
-
- 2) What is the difference, between Windows 3.0 .BMP's, OS/2 1.1 .BMP's and,
- if they exist, OS/2 2.0 .BMP's? Which one should I use?
-
- 3) Trying some of the 1024x768 bitmaps from software.watson seemed to work
- ok, but these are in .BGA format. If it is possible, how do I transfer
- between the various formats? I tried CVBMP from hobbes, but that only
- goes into version 1.1 .BMP format.
-
- 4) What does the Service Pack's "palette management" function do for me, and
- how is that related?
-
-
- I understand that since the palette is limited to 256 total colours, and the
- WPS already using some of them, it isn't possible to exactly reproduce the
- original colours, but why the severe drop to only around 16 colours? Can't
- the OS assign the closest available colours to the bitmap?
-
- On a different note, the FAQ recommends against using a bitmap in the
- interests of keeping WPS operations snappy. Using a bitmap at 1024x768 with
- 256 colours consumes almost 800k of memory. Can this performance degradation`
- be alleviated by setting up a RAM disk and and sticking the bitmap there?
- Is this even possible to do? Upon bootup, the RAM disk needs to be set up
- as well as having the .BMP file copied into it, before the WPS comes up.
-
- Oh yes, my setup, if that makes a difference.
-
- GA+SP, running with ATI Graphics Ultra in 8514/a mode at 1024x768 res.
-
- Thanks for any suggestions.
