- I recently tried to get a 256 colour background bitmap to display on the WPS,
- but it simply doesn't seem to work. The original picture was a .GIF, so I
- used VPIC (DOS program) to convert it to a WIN 3.0 .BMP. When using this
- picture as a background, all the colours in it would be screwed up. Looks
- like only 16 colours now. Then I thought, HEY, I'll try converting it
- to an OS/2 bitmap and see if that helps. No go, I still get the same problem.
- I tried some of the .BGA (256 colour?) pics available on software.watson and
- those seem to work fine.
-
- Questions:
-
- 1) How do I get 256 colour bitmaps on my background?
-
- 2) How can I transfer my .GIF/.BMP files to a .BGA format?
-
- 3) What's the difference between a Windows .BMP and a OS/2 .BMP?
-
- 4) What does the inclusion of the 32-GRE's ability to do "palette
- management" do for me?
-
- I'm running in 1024x768x256 mode. with a Graphics Ultra, 8514/a drivers.
-
- It seems wasteful when there are maybe only a dozen colours being used on
- the desktop out of 256 available.
-
- I understand that the picture won't be able to use ALL 256 colours since the
- WPS us using a handfull, but can't the picture just take the closest ones
- available? Why do the number of colours have to be dropped so drastically
- from 256 to what seems like only 16?
-
- On a related note, using a background at 1024x768 requires almost 800k of
- bitmap. As pointed out in the FAQ, if speed is important, bitmap backgrounds
- should be avoided. To alleviate some of this performance degradation,
- can the bitmap be stored in a RAM disk? Could the RAM disk be generated, and
- the copy of the bitmap placed in it before the WPS requires it?
-
-
- Thanks for any help.
