- No, you're right -- that is correct. The installation program assumes
- a Workplace Shell installation, and the Workplace Shell is not
- supported on Hercules monochrome systems.
-
- I hate to do it, but in this case I really recommend a hardware remedy
- to this problem. One way is to use either an ATI EGA Wonder or a
- Paradise Monochrome EGA adapter in place of the Hercules adapter.
- These adapters support all EGA modes on TTL monochrome monitors, like
- yours. I've seen them on the secondary markets for $25 or so.
-
- Alternatively, a monochrome VGA monitor with basic VGA adapter can be
- had for under $100. OS/2 2.0's Workplace Shell really does work best
- with at least VGA.
-
- Nonetheless, if anyone is interested in a shareware/freeware type
- project, this one would be useful to a few people. A Hercules
- monochrome driver would bring OS/2 2.0 to the very low end systems.
- Also, many LAN servers are endowed with the less capable displays
- (simply because no one needs to sit at one all day), and if OS/2 could
- drive a Hercules display it might help there too.
