- Your friend is correct. Most "wear and tear" on a fixed disk occurs
- during power-up.
-
- |> Also, does leaving on the cpu use much energy.
-
- It uses a fair amount. Look up the wattage of your power supply. It will
- probably be around 200 watts (similar to leaving on 2 lamps, but nothing
- like an oven or clothes dryer).

-
- This is not necessary. Just running Windows (without any programs running)
- does not increase the system load.
-
-
- Some large scale studies have been done on this general issue. They compared
- leaving the computer on (cpu and power supply wear, energy consumption ...)
- vs. shutting the computer off after every use (wear on the disk, etc.).
- The conclustion that they all came to was that: leaving the computer on is
- actually the best course of action. Although, the actual cost/year difference
- was very small.
-
- For me, the bottom-line is the disk. I back-up weekly. But, even over that
- time period, the files that I have on my disk may be of much greater value
- than the whole PC itself.
-
- - back to the show...
