- Hock,

- I remember having that problem a loong time ago, but [naturally] I can't
- remember how I fixed it. I seem to recall trying to use the "modem"
- program to enable & disable the getty process, but it invariably
- screwed things up [ie: it wouldn't re-enable, I got the same "empty
- process-name" thing out of ps, etc.]
-
- Once you've got the modem and such all hooked up, try killing the INIT
- process and then killing the getty process; it should restart ok
- and you should be able to log-in remotely. I should add that it
- helps immeasurably if you have another computer or dumb terminal
- you can hook up to and test it from, rather than having do dial
- in to your own fone [or, worse yet, having to bother a friend to
- dial in and tell you what he sees.]
-
- SO: kill -1 1, then kill the getty process, and then try logging in.
-
- You might also want to put in your ttys file "202" [0 for the baud
- rate] - I find that getty doesn't always "like" to set the baud
- to what you want it to be!
-
- Hope that helped..
