- Hi, I have JUST recently flogged my way through installing Linux on
- my 486/33mhz system, using my second partition as a linux/minux partition.
-
- i) My first problem, which I encountered DURING the installation proccess
- was that everytime I am asked to put a disk in, this message(after the
- [msdos...]) pops up: "no bmap support". What does this mean?
-
- ii) Secondly, now that I've finished, and I log in as 'root', and
- type 'startx' to run the X-Windows stuff, it gives me a bunch of errors:-
-
- /home/wonge# startx
-
- Creating TCP socket: Invalid argument
- XFree Version 1.0Ya / X Window System
- (Protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 5000)
- Configured drivers
- VGA256 (256 color SVGA);
- et4000, et3000, pvga1, gvga, ati, tvga8900
- VGA256: et4000 (mem: 0k numclocks: 16)
- VGA256: clocks: 25 28 36 27 30 33 20 24 50 57 72 45 60 65 40 47
- VGA256: Too little memory for virtual resolution
-
- *** None of the configured devices was detected.***

-
- Fatal server error:
- no screens found
- giving up.
- xinit: Invalid argument (errno 22): unable to connect to X server
- xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

- I'm using a Trident 8900C with 512k. 8 Megs of memory. Does
- anyone know what I 'could've done wrong?
-
- iii) Another question is, that am I supposed to be missing a 'man' entry
- for "adduser"? If not, how do I add a user, or what process do I need
- to implement in order to add a user?
-
- iv) When I do a 'w' command at the prompt, I get the following:-
-
- User tty login@ idle JCPU PCPU what
- LOGIN tty1 6:09pm 23
- LOGIN tty4 2:43pm 3:48
- cabralda tty3 6:08pm 17
- wonge tty2 6:08pm
- LOGIN tty6 21Jan80 14:48
- LOGIN tty5 21Jan80 14:48
- LOGIN ttyp1 16Nov92110days
-
- Why do I have an extra THREE LOGIN's (tty5,tty6 and ttyp1)?
-
- v) Is there some sort of textfile that I can find on "Unix
- Administration" besides the mentioned one or two in the FAQ?
-
- vi) How would I be able to log on remotely and be able to fiddle with
- my system? You know, the standard remote logins?
-
- vii) This question actually relates to iii). In the passwd file,
- and the shadow file in /etc, what do each colons and commas
- separate; that is, what are the parameters for each entry?
- I remembered reading this somewhere, but forgot.
-
-
- Hmm I think that is all.. I hope someone can help me, especially for
- number (ii), (v), (vi), (vii).
-
- Any help appreciated....Thanks
- .
