- I've gotten lost in all the types of filesystems available
- for linux and would appreciate either answers or pointers to
- existing FAQs for the following:
-
- 1. The 'default' filesystem is limited to 14-character filenames
- which breaks lots of software I'd like to run that assume
- longer-than-14-characters. What do I need to do to get
- the long filenames ? Since 14 is the default, I assume that
- anything else isn't 'official'. What's the condition of
- any such unofficial setup ? (alpha, beta-but-almost-perfect...)
-
- 2. Is there still a hard partition size limit ??? What is the maximum
- partition size in MB that's "official" ? How about the various
- extensions ? What condition are they (alpha, beta, etc.).
-
- 3. I have an existing BBS files area on a DOS partition that's accessible
- via mtools. I think I remember being able to mount this partition
- as a 'msdos' filesystem and have it appear as a linux filesystem.
- How do you do this ? (again, how 'official' is it and is there any
- risk in doing so?).
-
- My setup currently is:
-
- - SLS0.98-5 (soon to up it to 0.99)
- - /dev/hdb2 as /
- - /dev/hdb3 as swap
- - /dev/hdb1 as an old mcc-interim soon to be nuked
- - /dev/hda1 as DOS c:
- - /dev/hda5 as DOS d:
- - all linux filesystems currently 'normal' not using any of
- the linux extensions (I used mkfs, not mkefs).
